The eCopter, an electric helicopter by the startup FlyNow Aviation, has just completed several test flights in Austria.
Its unique appearance catches attention, especially the fact that it has no tail. The prototype of the eCopter was announced in 2021, but it only took off in 2023 with the help of cables.
Now, it seems that it has overcome its initial limitations and completed more substantial flights, though it remained at low altitude. The company plans to fly higher in the coming months and officially launch it for commercial flights by 2027.
The innovative helicopter from FlyNow fits into the eVTOL category (Electric Vertical Take-off and Landing). This means that it is capable of performing vertical take-offs.

Even without a tail, the manufacturer highlights that the model is lighter than traditional helicopters and remains fully functional. Currently, the eCopter can reach a maximum speed of up to 130 km/h for a flight of about 50 km.
“Each milestone brings us closer to making urban air mobility a reality for everyone,” said the company’s co-founder and COO, Yvonne Winter, according to the New Atlas website.
“The successful cable-free flight of our eCopter is not just a technical achievement – it’s a visible proof that our vision works. Many did not take our cable flights seriously, but seeing is believing. With this free flight, we show that FlyNow is ready to drive urban mobility forward.”
